Under the opening are two separate containers or compartments: one for solid waste (e.g., toilet paper) and one for liquids (urine). Separating toilets use the principle of separating solid and liquid waste. When using the toilet, the user separates urine and solid waste by either urinating into different openings or by using separating inserts to prevent urine from entering the solid waste. This creates two separate waste streams that are easier to manage.
The solid waste is collected in a special bag or container that can be emptied and disposed of regularly. Most separating toilets are equipped with a biodegradable liner that minimises odours and speeds up the decomposition process.
