Test report from 20.06.2018
Where was the Alphatronics SL-22 DSB+ TV in use?
„At home to test on the cable connection and then in the caravan, mounted on an adjustable bracket for use when camping.“
How long could you test the product?
„2 days so far“
How easy was it to install the flat screen?
„Mounting the flat screen itself is very simple, but a mount for use in camping vehicles should be carefully selected. This should not move while driving and offer a large mounting surface (in caravans usually only short screws possible). There is a wide range of suitable VESA mounting brackets for the SL-22 flat panel display“
How difficult was the first setup of the device for you in the test?
„Actually quite intuitive to use, the manual is sufficiently detailed.“
How do you like the look and finish of the flat screen TV?
„The looks and workmanship are OK in this price segment. The frame is relatively narrow, which is positive.“
How do you feel about the image quality?
„Even on HD, the picture is sharp and the colors are OK.“
How high quality is the image from different viewing angles?
„If you look a bit sideways, you'll notice a bit of color distortion, but that remains acceptable.“
Which features (Bluetooth, CI-Slot, DVD-Player, DVBT-2 etc.) did you take advantage of and how do you rate them?
„DVBT-2, DVD player and connection via digital cable connection were tested
The DVD player works perfectly, but it's a pity that you can't see anywhere on the device how to insert the DVD
The reception of DVBT-2 worked technically, but is very limited by the number of stations, even with a high-quality external antenna including amplification.
Cable connection works flawlessly.“
How satisfied are you with the sound for a TV this size?
„Not tested very extensively, but certainly not something for audiophiles. For normal TV broadcasts, however, absolutely OK.“
Would you recommend the device to others?
„I would make one recommendation.“
What is the price-performance ratio?
„There are certainly cheaper devices, but here the range of functions fits the price - OK!“
Overall impression:
„The device is just the right size for a camping vehicle. With an adjustable holder, we can use the TV in our caravan both inside and in the door in the awning. The setup is simple and quickly made, but when camping in the long run is certainly still needed a satellite system, unfortunately DVB-T2 is not very well spread and the reception is quite limited in terms of the number of channels.“

Test report from 14.05.2018
Where was the Alphatronics SL-22 DSB+ TV in use?
„The device was tested by a deaf person (that's me) in a mobile home. Only the evaluation of the sound via loudspeaker comes from my wife. How can a deaf person still get an overall impression of a TV set? What sense does a test by a deaf person make? Many people without hearing can still hear (to a limited extent). This is made possible by so-called cochlear implants. These are electronic ears implanted in the head (one replaces the left ear, a second the right ear).
It is not possible to "hear" a TV program or video through the speaker built into the device because the sound quality is too poor for the implants. This is the case with any TV set, including my TV at home.
With this report, in addition to general impressions on operation, sound and picture, I offer you an instruction manual on how people with cochlear implants, but also people with modern hearing aids, can benefit from the sl-22 (presumably this also applies to the other devices in this series).“
How long could you test the product?
„I tested the device as well as the technology for the hearing impaired for two months in various configurations.“
How easy was it to install the flat screen?
„The installation or conversion in the motorhome was as expected without problems. The only catch is the small plug for the power supply. Why the manufacturers have still not agreed on a uniform format of the plug is beyond me. So I had no choice but to replace the plug (cut off the old, fix the new by means of clamps on the power supply line).“
How difficult was the first setup of the device for you in the test?
„The sl-22's menu scope and functions are basically quite clear, i.e. flawless. However, you should stand quite close to the monitor during the initial settings, otherwise you will overlook that there is a second menu selection at the upper edge of the screen after pressing the menu button. That was the reason why I wasn't able to connect an external speaker via Bluetooth at first. The term "Bluetooth" is found both in the selection on the first level of the menu (there is nothing with the connection), and in the menu item "Sound" when you scroll to the right in the upper bar. The connection with the individual devices is problem-free and you can later switch back and forth between the individual devices in the list. Great solution.
In contrast to the factory-installed TV, channel scanning on the sl-22 is easy and enormously fast. Speaking of channels: I really like the info bar and its contents, which are visible in the lower screen area when changing programs.“
How do you like the look and finish of the flat screen TV?
„What can you do wrong in terms of looks for such a small device? The workmanship seems impeccable to me.“
How do you feel about the image quality?
„I had already looked at a few devices at past caravan fairs because the picture quality of the factory-fitted TV in my motorhome in particular is - to put it mildly - catastrophic. The sl-22 from alphatronics, on the other hand, exceeds my wildest expectations: Top resolution, not a single pixel error.“
How high quality is the image from different viewing angles?
„Flawless image from every viewing position. Respect!“
Which features (Bluetooth, CI-Slot, DVD-Player, DVBT-2 etc.) did you take advantage of and how do you rate them?
„The most important reason for my application as a tester was the Bluetooth 4.2 built into the device. For cochlear implant wearers (CI for short) as well as for hearing aid wearers, reverberation and background noise mean that you can hear sounds but very often cannot understand anything. Two technical solutions provide a remedy: Headphones and so-called FM transmitters. In principle, it is also possible (variant 3) to connect (in this case) the TV set to the hearing aid or CI using a special cable that is connected to the headphone output. But firstly, the cable would have to be very long (keyword: distance between TV set and seat), secondly, it is terribly annoying because the cable is always in the way and you easily trip over it. This also applies to wired headphones, for which there are any extensions. However, the special cable (I have such a cable myself) is only available with a maximum length of one meter, according to my knowledge so far. So this option is ruled out either way.
As is well known, you have the choice between wired headphones and those with Bluetooth. Both work flawlessly in the sl-22. Shortcoming: The volume of the headphones and speakers cannot be controlled separately.
Wearers of CIs or hearing aids with FM technology that supports Bluetooth also achieve flawless results. I use a DM90 (Comfort Digisystem Microphone DM90) from Comfortaudio on the sl-22 together with two Micro Receivers DT20 (one each on the two CIs, logical). Of course, there are other manufacturers besides Comfortaudio that offer such solutions. Advantage: no background noise, but pure TV sound in the ear (hearing aid) or in the head (with the CI). The sl-22 recognizes and accepts the connection to the FM devices without problems. Hooray!!!
Now the fly in the ointment: if hearing and hearing-impaired people want to watch a movie together, we need sound from the speaker and Bluetooth at the same time. This works in principle. However, the signal transmission on Bluetooth occurs with a slight time delay to the signal from the speaker. The audience in front of the speaker doesn't care, they can't hear the sound from the headphones. The situation is exactly the other way around for the wearer of the headphones.
I then bought the TT-BA01 Bluetooth transmitter from Taotronics to create a second Bluetooth interface on the headphone output. By the way: Why can't the sl-22 be given multi bluetooth functionality? That would solve all the problems. My Apple computers can do that. Technically, that would be feasible on the sl-22 as well, I suppose. Unfortunately, the second Bluetooth transmitter is not a solution that works; the signal transmission is still time-delayed even so.
That leaves two solutions for the hearing impaired - assuming only two people are watching TV: One takes the Bluetooth headset and listens via the sl-22's Bluetooth interface; the other takes a wired headset and plugs it into the TV's headphone jack. Those who have an FM system connect directly to the FM transmitter via Bluetooth instead of the headphones.“
How satisfied are you with the sound for a TV this size?
„Regarding the sound quality, I can only quote my (hearing) wife: The sound is a bit thin, as with all other devices from other manufacturers that I have looked at so far, but clear and distinct. If you like, you can try out other, pre-programmed sound profiles in the sl-22's sound settings.“
Would you recommend the device to others?
„Absolutely! Disadvantages (thin sound, only one Bluetooth device connectable at a time) are present, but do not really diminish the enjoyment. The first-class picture, the quick installation and the wireless connection option for e.g. external speakers (that brings cinema atmosphere into the camper) alone are a purchase recommendation.“
What is the price-performance ratio?
„What are 100 euros more for the quality and equipment??!!!“
Overall impression:
„A really great device at an acceptable price that leaves (almost) nothing to be desired in terms of quality and features.“
